Downs to Conduct Carmel Symphony Orchestra in Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s Production of The Nutcracker

Conductor Andrew Downs
Andrew Downs has been selected to conduct the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) for The Nutcracker performance being presented by the Indiana Ballet Conservatory for four performances at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts. Both show dates – Saturday, November 29th and Sunday, November 30 – will  each include matinee and evening performances. This production is a traditional favorite for many families to launch into the holiday season.

“I am so incredibly excited for our production of Nutcracker! I’m honored to share the production with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and Indiana Ballet Conservatory on Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. I’ve performed at the Moscow Conservatory’s concert hall where many of Tchaikovsky’s works were premiered including his fourth symphony. Being in the space that Tchaikovsky himself would’ve heard his own music will always send a shiver down my spine. The Nutcracker is an incredible show that houses a captivating story told by sublime music. It’s my greatest privilege to be able to share this remarkable work with all of you!” said Conductor Downs.

About Andrew Downs:
A native of New Orleans, LA, conductor Andrew Downs has been praised for his rigorous commitment to bringing opera and symphonic music to life. Downs has performed on many of the world stages including the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg and Royal Albert Hall in London. He has served as an associate conductor for the Cabrillo Festival, assistant conductor and pianist for the Sarasota Opera, conducting fellow with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and assistant conductor and coach for the Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater.

His unbridled commitment to bring music into the lives of young people began with his work as music director of Reimagining Opera for Kids, an organization whose aim was to bring meaningful lessons and exposure to music through newly commissioned operas. In his work with the New Music Ensemble at Indiana University, Downs premiered numerous newly commissioned works from living composers.

Musically, Downs is Indiana homegrown. He completed all his training at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He studied conducting with Arthur Fagen, Thomas Wilkins, David Neely, Jeffrey Meyer, and David Dzubay; double bass with Bruce Bransby and Jeffrey Turner; piano with Gregory Sioles, Jean Louis Haguenauer, and David Cartledge; and harpsichord with Hsuan Chang-Kitano. Downs is indebted to his mentors and expresses immense love and gratitude for them.

Artist-Painted Rain Barrel

Dubbie Buckler with the rain barrel she sponsored on behalf of the CSO

Carmel Symphony Orchestra is a sponsor of one of the rain barrels painted by local artists, thanks to CSO board member Dubbie Buckler who donated the funding to sponsor a barrel again in this year’s “Rain on Main” to raise CSO’s community presence.

“This is a very creative way to incorporate art and attract attention to the importance of water quality and conservation while bringing attention to the Carmel Symphony Orchestra at the same time,” said Buckler.

Carmel Symphony Orchestra’s sponsored barrel, #14 “Tropical Cat”, was painted by artist Shelby Hobbs.  Local artists transform 65-gallon urn style rain barrels into one-of-a-kind pieces of art at this annual event to raise funds for water quality education in Carmel.

See all 20 barrels August 15-22 in the Arts and Design District along Main St., and at the Carmel Farmers Market Saturday, August 23rd. In addition to the judged art competition, the public can vote for their favorite artsy barrel in the People’s Choice contest on Facebook from now through 10 a.m. Saturday, August 23rd. The online auction of the barrels is underway and ends at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23rd.

Thank you Honor Roll Supporters!

The Honor Roll supporting the Carmel Symphony Orchestra has just passed $90,000 thanks to our generous donors. We began this campaign June 1 and hope to reach our goal of $250,000 by the end of the year.

“Supporting the CSO—and organizations like it—isn’t just support for the arts. It’s support for culture, education, connection, and excellence. These institutions don’t just entertain us; they elevate us. They give voice to emotion, meaning to tradition, and hope for the future. I urge everyone to stand behind the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. The arts only thrive when communities believe in them—and I, for one, always will.”

CSO Violinists to play at Prime Life Enrichment August 27th

Amanda Baer
Nicholas Drumm
As part of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) Educational and Community Outreach initiatives, members of the CSO provide enriching educational experiences throughout the year outside of the traditional concert setting. They often entertain at local senior activity centers and senior living communities.

On Wednesday, August 27th, orchestra violinists Amanda Baer and Nicholas Drumm will play and discuss the pieces for the audience at Prime Life. These intimate settings are a wonderful way to engage with the community and broaden the understanding of the classical music being performed by the CSO. There are also health benefits to listening to classical music. The shared appreciation of music fosters community and reduces isolation, while engaging with complex compositions can help keep the brain active. Studies also show that listening to music may improve memory, focus, and processing speed, which is especially valuable for seniors. Familiar melodies may evoke personal memories, spark conversation and enhance quality of life.
